I once was lost……

January 12th, 2010

Amazing Grace is one of the most beautiful songs that was ever written.  Of course you mainly hear this song at a funeral, but take a minute and read the lyrics and think about it’s wonderful message.

Another thing that’s amazing is that I don’t believe I have ever heard this song done as a Christian Rock song. If you’ve heard it done this way, please let me know who did it. I’d love to hear it.

Okay, read the lyrics and be amazed!

Amazing Grace by John Newton (1725-1807)

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
‘Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

When we’ve been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’ve first begun.

It isn’t exactly rock, but Todd Agnew has a version of this that is really pretty good. I have heard both his album version and an acoustic set, and both a great.

I used to sing it in the 70’s to the tune of the house of the rising sun. I am not sure where I heard it but it seems like someone had recorded it. Thats probably not the kind of rock you were talking about but its all I know. Good luck and you’re right it is a great song . I also heard it to the tune of a song they used on coke commercials. “Id like to teach the world to sing”

Amazing Because It Is- The Almost. Not word for word, but it’s in there. :)

When I first heard it sung to the tune of “House of the Rising sun” it opened up almost a whole new meaning of the song to me. Instead of just at funerals it was a song that I could listen to anytime that I needed reassurance so to speak. It was at a Peter Gabriel concert back in the late 90’s and it was sung (and has been recorded) by a group called “The Five Bilnd Boys From Alabama” and they are all blind and they are amazing as well.

Keep up the great work you are doing.
